John Lewis was asked about Bernie Sanders Civil Rights bona fides Thursday and the Selma legend channeled his inner Mariah Carey and was very much “I don’t know her.” Well, actually he said, “I never saw him. I never met him,” and thus the questioning of Bernie Sanders Civil Rights work as a college student began. I wrote a piece about it for The Root breaking down how many Lewis’ incredulousness has something to do with the throngs of white people over the age of 60 who swear they marched with MLK.

Or maybe he was just being shady. Could be a little of both! Continue reading

Although I don’t write about it very much, I am very into action adventure, fantasy and sci-fi films and TV shows. I also watch a lot of reality TV garbage and (obviously) news programming. My friend Jada Prather and I decided to start making videos about it and this one on Avengers: Age of Ultron is the first one! Naturally, it’s not perfect (Jada needs to speak up a bit and I’m loud as ever), but I think the videos turned out OK, considering I haven’t edited video in years. Check the first one out. Then check out Part 2 and Part 3 below. Continue reading

The Root: My Black History

For The Root this February I penned a post on what I felt were the biggest “black history moments” for me in my 37 years of living. Since I knew other folks already picked “Tupac Gets Shot” and I didn’t want to steal their journalistic thunder, I had to go with something else. Lucky for me, a lot of black history — good and bad — happened when I was growing up, from the L.A. riots to Mae Jemison becoming the first black woman in space in 1992. After a lot of idea juggling (Write about Lani Guinier? The Shiny Suit Era? The 90s were a formative time for me!) I decided to go with the ones that impacted the cultural sphere of my little world the most: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” the debut of “A Different World,” the O. J. Simpson trial and the Million Man March.

The Root: Abolish Voter Registration! (Make It Automatic for the People)

Today for The Root I counter that whole “two thirds of eligible voters did not vote in the last election” stuff with a solution to improve turnout. Get rid of voter registration altogether and make registration automatic for all citizens once they turn 18. Instead of hoping people get involved in the process voluntarily, let’s fast track everyone to the front of the line. After all “voter registration” is more about voter suppression than getting the vote out … SO SAYS HISTORY! Continue reading

The Root: The Worst States for Black People

If you want to carry a baby to full term, not get arrested CONSTANTLY and for your children to have a future, these are the states to avoid. (I wrote about it for The Root.) Most of them are in the Midwest and as a Midwesterner I can tell you — the Midwest can kind of blow for black people. Even more so than the South, which at least seems to understand that black people are supposed to live there. The Midwest is always treating you like a stranger even if you’ve been in Michigan for four generations.

Because “racism.” Continue reading
