Señor Baby Wipes Gets Axed From “Iron Man 2”

My favorite effeminate, vain, soul-humping pretty boy, Señor Baby Wipes, aka Terrence Howard, was axed from the Iron Man sequel. He’s been replaced by the ultimate black utility actor, Don Cheadle, a man who would probably be more famous if Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Foxx fell off the face of the earth.

Competition, kid. Even Terrence Howard was in his way … until now.

I love The Cheadle (and I LOVED Iron Man — damn, that was one sexy, cool action flick — so I’m happy for him getting in a big pay day blockbuster), but it’s rare for a studio to fiddle with the cast of a film that was so insanely successful. Everyone in the movie was the hotness, from Robert Downy Jr. on down, so I had to consult to insiders to find out why El Vanity No Good Lover Howard didn’t the reboot.

From Yahoo Movies:

When it was announced that Terrence Howard was out of “Iron Man 2” and that Don Cheadle would be taking over the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes, the question on most observers’ minds was “Why?” The first film was an enormous success, turning a little-known Marvel Comics character into a household name and raking in $318 million domestically. Howard received solid reviews for his work in the film. And the movie itself seemed to indicate that Rhodey would have a bigger part in the sequel when he looked at the silver Mark II suits and said to himself, “Next time, baby.”

Terrence Howard himself seemed at a loss as to why he was replaced, telling NPR that getting the news was “the surprise of a lifetime.” Initial reports said that negotiations between Howard’s representatives and Marvel Studios “fell through over financial differences,” but a recent article in Entertainment Weekly suggests it was more complicated than that.

Howard was the first actor signed to the film and, on top of that, was the highest-paid. That’s right: more than Gwyneth Paltrow. More than Jeff Bridges. More than Robert Downey Jr. And once the project fully came together, it was too late to renegotiate his deal. (Entertainment Weekly)

Director Jon Favreau told Ain’t It Cool News before shooting even began that he had cast Howard with the intention of giving Rhodey a bigger role in the sequels, eventually getting his own suit of mechanized armor to become “War Machine.” But according to EW’s source, “Favreau and his producers were ultimately unhappy with Howard’s performance, and spent a lot of time cutting and reshooting his scenes.”

Consequently, as Favreau and screenwriter Justin Theroux began the process of structuring the second movie, they reduced the scale of Rhodey’s part. With the role pared down, Marvel presented Howard’s agents with a much smaller offer than he received for the first movie.

The agents, according to sources, were so taken aback by this new figure – estimated at somewhere between a 50 and 80 percent pay cut – that they questioned it. Why did they blanch? Multiple sources say that Marvel execs never told Howard’s reps that they had issues with the star’s on-set conduct

So what I’m gleaning from this, el hombre blew it. He was the biggest and highest paid star attached to the film before Downy Jr. proved he could leave the crack and booze alone and pull off the performance of a life time as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. (Damn, he was sexy. But I have a thing for super heroes. If they ever make a black Superman and I ain’t talkin’ Shaquille O’Neil in Steel. I mean, The Rock or Nate Parker. Or someone who is so hot and noble looking that I’ll want him to call me “Lois Lane” Mary Jane Girls style … all night long. You know what I’m talking about fangirls! Screw Margot Kidder and Kate Bosworth. What about me? What about the sisters? We wanna go up, up and away! Rescue my ass for once!)

Back to Baby Wipes, though …

Either Howard is an insufferable bitch or this is the classic case of Hollywood playing the Hollywood Shuffle with the minorities. As much as I love The Cheadle, I’m bummed that I won’t see the smooth cool of my sweet, sweet Señor Baby Wipes. Granted, his ego is probably huge from the back-to-back critical successes of “Hustle and Flo” and “Crash.” From his half assed Terence Trent D’Arby-esque singing to “Iron Man,” to countless magazine covers, Terrence was/is/going to be what every Will Smith and Jamie Foxx and Denzel couldn’t be … a swexy, smooth asshole. A new variation on type.

Smith works hard, but Señor is a better actor. Foxx is multi-talented, but, again, Señor is the better actor. Washingt
Well, that’s a toughie. That’s both Tom Hanks, Marlon Brando and Sidney Poitier wrapped in one. He’s Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. Equally talented and charming Morgan Freeman bows down when Denzel comes to his town. I don’t know how he’ll beat that. Denzel is getting older. That means he can’t take some of the parts he used to, I’m seeing a three-way fight to be America’s no. 1 black military/cop/historical figure/investigator/action/drama actor. My point is, Señor was/is supposed to BLOW UP. Not getting in Iron Man 2, the closest thing to a guaranteed paycheck outside of the Batman sequel, not getting rehired after America LIKED you in Iron Man means something really, really foul went down.

You blew it, Baby Wipes!

But C’st la vie! The Cheadle is back, baby, going for another shot at the apple! Get ’em, Cheadle, get ’em! Don’t let ’em know what hit ’em!

  1. i really can’t stand terrence howard. i think he’s a typical house negroe, and though he’s an okay actor, my disgust of him generally prevents me from seeing any movie he stars in. i’m a comic book fan, so i saw iron man despite his presence. i’m glad a hardworking, intelligent, thoughtful BLACK MAN like Cheadle will now be in the role. i’ll enjoy the sequel even more 🙂

  2. Howard got paid more Downy Jr. How bizzare. I didn’t see original Iron Man, so I doubt I’ll see the sequel. I can’t relate to these action/fantasy movies (found The Ring, Spiderman and X-Men pretty boring ) anymore. When I was a kid, Iron Man was a popular comic book, although it probably is little remembered now. Incidentally, I thought Howard was good in the overrated “Crash.”

  3. I think Howard is one of the best actors in Hollywood, he just hasn't had his BIG break yet. Hustle & Flow was an incredible film and Howard's performance as D.Jay was nothing short of extraordinary; but being in Iron Man 2 as War Machine would've propelled him into a household name. There's no role like a super-hero role, and Howard truly blew it.I'm not bummed at all at Cheadle; the rumor is that Marvel Studios wanted Cheadle in the first place, but he was busy filming something else at the time. But Cheadle needs his big blockbuster besides the Ocean films, and he's finally got it.

  4. I’m going to go with him being an insufferable-greedy douche. Yup, that’s my choice and I’m sticking to it.Howard is indeed talented, and to be fair, I CANNOT SEE CHEADLE as “Rhodey”. Howard and Downey has such chemistry together. Trust and believe that fangirls the world over are not satisfied with this. And when I say fangirls I mean primarily YT fangirls. Oh the petitions-links I’ve seen!Ultimately, they better make it work; they being the writers and the director, producers, etc. Cheadle is a class act and I hope he can bring it wearing the War Machine suit. I’ll just have to try and separate his visage from my mind’s eye of seeing him as “Basher” of Ocean’s 11,12,13 fame.

  5. I think you have answered your own questions. Terrence was supposed to “blow” up several times. He has been given more opportunities than many other actors. Notice he rarely (if ever) works with the same directors again? He must know his reputation but chooses not to change. If Will Smith and Brad Pitt who are much bigger stars can be a joy to work with on set so can Terrance. He needs to figure it out. That said I love Don and I will be seeing IRONMAN2 even though I’m over super hero movies.

  6. Howard is a bit too “pretty” in my opinion – he’s gorgeous, but I feel like Cheadle has more of a deep sexuality intermixed with an obvious intellectual quality that grabs my attention. He just seems more real overall…I love your blog by the way!!! =)

  7. I’m a big fan of Iron Man and I loved Terrence Howard in the role, but he was very replaceable. Robert Downey Jr. makes the movie. The only way I won’t see this again is if he didn’t return as Tony Stark. I’m sorry to hear the way went down…but I’ll be checking for Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2; it’s about time he gets into more mainstream roles so he can get more props cause he’s a hell of an actor.

  8. Im a big fan of comic books stop collecting them in 2005. But I have to disagree with you Snob I did not like Terrance Howard performance in Iron Man, he did not capture what the role of James Rhodes is. Too much of a mother figure in the film, so much so i thought he was going to change Tony Starks diaper. Me and my friends kept giving each other the side eye at the show, like WTF! LOL-MeanRose

  9. I’ve been following the story for a while because I am a fan of comic books in general and Iron Man and War Machine in particular. I’ve heard a couple of fishy things. I have heard some fishy rumors and the full story has not come out. I’m glad to see the story brought out here on this fine publication. The thing is I think Terrence was done dirty. I like Cheadle, but I prefer continuity. I have seen at least one petition to get Howard reinstated but with Cheadle signing on to do Iron Man 2 and Avengers I guess that’s not going to happen.

  10. I’ve heard several times that Mr. Howard is not the easiest to work with – and he’s not really that big of a star. Bad attitude with limited star power means you don’t get too many bites at the apple. Personally, I didn’t like his performance and think that Don Cheadle is infinitely more talented than he is. Hopefully a meatier role will be given to Don and we can see him really take off. And I’ll disagree that Denzel is a better actor than Morgan Freeman – Mr. Freeman outdoes Mr. Washington (especially recently with Denzel phoning in many of his performances). Have you Freeman in Street Smart?? He is absolutely terrifying and blows Christopher Reeves (RIP) off the screen.

  11. Street Smart? I completely forgot about that movie. An oldie but goodie. I really loved Freeman in “Wanted.” It was really more exciting and better than the recent Batman movie, although it didn’t get the attention. I didn’t know Freeman could play a bad guy so well.

  12. Wow I can’t believe he got more money than all the white actors. What were they paid? And can I see a big blockbuster with some BLACK WOMEN please!!!

  13. You know Hollywood prefers black men who look like black men. Besides Terrence Howard, how many fair skinned black male STARS can you name?

  14. Don’t think it was Howard. If there was a real problem with him on set they would have told his agents. I’m betting everyone wanted more money ’cause of the success of the film. They didn’t want to pay Howard the cash and tried to get out of it. When they didn’t tehy dropped him.If they wanted Cheadle to begin with then it was an easy firing.I think he’s an ass but i thinkin this case he was done dirty.

  15. I could not be more pleased about this change.Terrence Howard pales in comparison to my Don Cheadle. The Cheadle is extremely attractive, terribly well-spoken and liked and is an actor of the first water. He’s the man and the sooner he is massively introduced to mainstream audiences is the sooner he attains the stature he deserves.

  16. I think Howard and Cheadle are house. Howard moreso.I am waiting for Geoffrey Wright to be recognized. HIS talent is almost immeasurable! The Iron Man II thing I don’t think is going to work, though. Continuity is so important in comic films. Sigh.
