Roland S. Martin: The "S" Is For "Swagger" (Guest Post)

By Brokey McPoverty

Hey,  hey, brotha. Remember last weekend when you were getting ready for the club, and you had on your finest Steve Harvey suit with your mint green gators, and you jumped back, intending to kiss yourself, but instead found yourself gazing in the mirror saying, "Damn.  If only this outfit had just a little more Roland S. Martin."

Remember that? Oh, it didn’t happen?  Oh.

Well … pretend it did and keep reading.

Lookie Der! It's The Snob In The Daily Beast Again!

This time it's me complaining about the lack of diversity in cable news! (You already got a preview of this rant on my own site.) But this time I get to elaborate on why it is considered OK for Tucker Carlson to fail at only Lord knows how many cable TV shows, but my dear Uncle Rolly Rolls, Roland Martin, WHO I LOVE, gets the whole "He doesn't deserve another shot at the majors because he couldn't save Campbell Brown's crappy show." That's some bollocks, son! Why Roland Martin is just as good (if not infinitely better) than ol' Tucker and he's twice as chippy as ANY screaming white guy on TV! DIVERSITY! Go get some! Don't be "scurred" cable newsers! (The Daily Beast)

Lou Dobbs Frustrates Roland Martin and Chris Matthews Murders A Man On Live Television (Birthers)

Roland Martin of CNN and Chris Matthews of MSNBC took to the airwaves with the same mission: to kill the "birther" argument over whether or not President Obama is a citizen of the United States. How did they do? Well, the results were mixed.

While Lou Dobbs was a wily, slippery, recalcitrant foe for my fair Roland "Rolly Rolls" Martin, Chris Matthews killed G. Gordon Liddy with his flapping yap, leaving the old ex-convict a withering, muttering muddle of nothingness.

Let's look at the tape!

No Matter What They Do, It's Still A Barrell O' Suck

Remember when CNN employed Roland Martin as Campbell Brown's seat-filler and folks bemoaned it? Well, Campbell returned. They renamed the show. And ... sacre bleu! It's actually doing WORSE!

Campbell Brown Returns, But Where Does That Leave My Dear Rolly Rolls? (Old News)

In case you missed all this "Roland Martin related drama" last week, like I did, CNN anchor Campbell Brown returned to No Bias, No Bull last week. (Now no longer called "No Bias, No Bull.")

The show is in a horrifying fourth place slot getting beat (again) by friggin' Headline News. For those not watching, CNN contributor Roland Martin sat in for Brown while she was on maternity leave. Some wondered if the babysitting gig was a trial balloon for Martin finally getting his own show. But because CNN's ratings are trè crappè right now, everything is up in the air.

As long time readers may know, I love Roland Martin even if he does not love me. I so enjoy it when he pops up on the blog to set me straight about something or other. It's hilarious and wonderful. I don't know if he finds it hilarious and wonderful. HE SHOULD. But I doubt it.

Someone who I know Roland doesn't find "hilarious" or "wonderful" right now is The Root's Jimi Izrael, who incurred the wrath of Roland over some anecdote where he claimed my fair Rolly Rolls was some sort of incense and beef jerky peddler back in the day. In the biggest backhanded compliment of a blog posting ever, Jimi quite amazingly praises Roland while repeatedly kicking him in the gonads.

No Blessings for Baby If Daddy is Jerk

I was over at What About Our Daughters yesterday and suffered a severe head rupturing upon reading the exchange between WAOD and TV talking head/minister Roland "Rolly Rolls!" Martin and his new black male accountability initiative that just happens to be punitive to women and their children.

I’ve called on pastors nationwide to stop the stream of momma, grandmother, aunts and female cousins coming to the altar for baby dedications with no man in sight. That pastor should say, “Until I personally meet with the father, I will not dedicate this child.” Somebody has to hold that man accountable for his actions. (Roland Martin)

I don't know how you get a man to show up for a Christening by telling the mother and her family who, you know, kind of want their child to be blessed in the church and loved by Jesus, that the minister will not do the service unless the father shows up.

Um ... what? Wait? WHAT???

The Limits of Blackness: Don't Hate!

I hate the term "hating."

I hated the original term "playa hating" and now I hate how the word has spread and is now applied to everything. You can't do any decent criticism without being accused of "hating" nowadays. This isn't because hating doesn't exist. Au contrar! The internet has made hating bigger (and more anonymous) than ever. Hence when you do have a legitimate point like, let's say, "Solange Knowles is of average talent and her album sales reflect that," you could be called a "hater."

Roland Martin: CNN Superstar (Save For One Pithy Hater)

The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz wrote an interesting piece on Roland Martin being the first African American to helm a show on CNN since Alan Keyes' aborted run on "Alan Keyes Is Making Sense."

Martin is sitting in for Campbell Brown on "No Bias, No Bull" and may get his own weekend, primetime show in the end.

In it, Kurtz goes through Martin's history as a journalist, his Liberal-leanings (despite that one time he voted for George H.W. Bush) and being anti-abortion/pro-death penalty. (Um ... Irony? If people are people and fetuses are people and murderers are people shouldn't you be pro all life? I mean, I got the Catholic's back on this one. And do you not know how many people, white and black, are being released from death row due to DNA evidence? We're killing innocent people while murderers walk the streets. You're like Alan Keyes, man. You're NOT MAKING SENSE!)

That said, I'm happy for Martin. He's a confident dude. I think he can live up to the not-quite-centrist view of the show. It's in fourth place so it can't do worse. I don't think he'll be a complete Obamabot or anything no matter what News Busters says. But some folks are seriously questioning CNN's common sense on this move.

Namely ... a hater.

We all have haters. Roland might think The Snob is a hater. I'm not. I'm a shameless self-promoter who has used two little complaints you made about the blog and pimped them as hard as possible to tell people that Roland Martin reads this blog.

Also, I'm not a big fan, but I didn't say what this dude said about you.

One who still hasn't taken to Martin, now a commentator on Tom Joyner's radio show, is Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg. They clashed bitterly on Martin's old radio show.

"I see him as a man who can't think, can't talk, and here he is doing both on television," Steinberg says. "I find it mystifying that CNN would take this local laughingstock and inflict him on the rest of the nation."

Classy! But Martin being Martin says he got his.

Martin, who says he "smacked him around" on the radio over a controversial column, calls Steinberg "a media wimp . . . a know-it-all with a penchant for being snotty."

Personally, I think Martin is simply highly ambitious. This is not a crime. I'm ambitious. But being ambitious will make people sometimes become annoyed with you or question your motives. Good luck with Campbell's show, Martin. This is CNN. If you're pretty, they let you read a teleprompter. If you have a brain, you could be put in that closet where they keep Soledad O'Brien.

Poor Soledad. Someday that contract will expire, girl, and you'll storm whatever is left of CBS and tell Katie Couric to get out of your damn chair.

PS. Did anyone check Roland out? How do you think he did?
