Clutch Magazine: Shade and Married to Medicine

In my latest post for Clutch Magazine Online I tackle how on the hit Bravo show Married to Medicine two of the personalities -- Quad and Mariah -- are extremely fond of black gay slang. Really fond. To the point of absurdity where they sound more like the old Looney Tunes "Goofy Gophers" than real people. In a lengthy post I talk about the history of cross-pollination between black gay culture and black lady culture and how both sides do so much dipping and stealing and modifying it's at times hard to tell who came up with what? A drag queen or your drunk grandmother? But in the end, this is all about being "extra," and standing out. Some walk across the street. Other work it like a runway. This post is about those people.

Clutch Magazine: Reality Shows Are the New Soap Operas

For Clutch Magazine on Tuesday I penned a piece on the new season of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta and how terrible/good it is, in the sense it is a trashy dime store romance, masqurading as "All My Non-Rappers" in a nice casserole made with nothing but Velveeta, it's so cheesy. Here's a snippet after the jump.

Clutch Magazine: On Reality TV Bipolar Shouldn't Be Another Word for Crazy

On reality TV the ladies have gone from calling each other "crazy" to saying "bipolar" and ... um ... so not cool. I write about this Thursday for Clutch Magazine Online. Here's a snippet: "The extreme behaviors of reality show participants (and the personality types these show attract) often have little to do with mental illness, yet cast members are quick to turn into amateur psychiatrists and diagnose their 'out-of-control' peers, often ignoring the fact that the very nature of a reality show is to push people into emotionally intense situations to get the most extreme responses possible out of them."

Clutch Magazine: Married to Medicine, Divorced From Reality

The cast of Married to Medicine. (Photo courtesy of Bravo TV)Tuesday for Clutch Magazine Online I tackle the latest "Black Women Behaving Badly" show, Bravo's Atlanta Housewives with medical degrees Married to Medicine. I lament that while reality drama can be escapism, seeing the same archetypes over and over make you long for scripted drama and real actresses.

RHOA's Porsha Stewart Is Perfect and I Love Her (But Let Me Explain)

Porsha Stewart reacts to gifts at her fairy tale wedding.Normally, I don't have much in ways of interest for Bravo's Real Housewives of Atlanta. It's a silly, fun show full of cringe-inducing people and a few glamour-pusses flouncing around and twirling. But this season has piqued my interest, but for one reason and one reason alone -- granddaughter of a civil rights activist and wife of former pro-football star Kordell Stewart -- loveable ditz Porsha Stewart.

Clutch Magazine: When Love Is Confused With Violence

Last week for Clutch Magazine (while I was adjusting to living in the Big Bad City of NYC), I penned another story on Evelyn Lozada and her newly estranged, soon to be divorced hubby, Chad Johnson. Recently Johnson decided to deal with his break up by getting a tattoo of his future ex-wife's face on his leg. To put it mildly, this sounds incredibly ill-advised. For this post I touched on the romanticising of violence and pain out of love, when it's the one you love doling out that violence and pain.

Vh1's "Basketball Wives" Solves Negative Image Problem By Getting Rid of Non-Negative Cast Members

Shaunie O'NealHey, how can Evelyn, Tami and Shaunie be mean to anyone if all the folks they were mean to aren't on the show anymore? Bullying problem solved! Just get rid of all the victims. (Including Jennifer Williams who was slapped and wouldn't drop the charges and Royce Reed, who all the other women decided they hated many moons ago.) Although, this is probably for the best for Kesha Nichols, as girl should have never, ever done that show. Got that, ladies? If you challenge the big three in the world's worst illegally pledging sorority you will get dropped from the line. Also: Don't come to me crying when Kenya Bell finally goes all Michael Myers on you. You guys throw drinks, bottles, yell and slap people. She stabs folks. She's not stuck on Vh1's Basketball Wives with you, you're stuck on Vh1's Basketball Wives with her.

Anger Management: Basketball Wives Reunion Edition

Basketball Wives star Tami Roman.Vh-1's Basketball Wives wrapped its fourth season this spring and it was a boozy haze of fights, bullying, more fights, more bullying, pettiness and finally Tami Roman and Evelyn Lozada (who used to not care all that much for each other) coming together to form Rage Wonder Twins all over Tahiti. So, naturally, the reunion had to be about "Hey, we're not bullies in stilettos! Look! We're all going to sit here and pretend to be normal. We're normal. Look, NORMAL! Tee-hee!"

Hahahahaha. No, girl. Y'all not normal.
