Watch The Snob Talk Mental Illness On Melissa Harris-Perry's Show (Video)

Sunday I was part of the latter segments of Melissa Harris-Perry's show on MSNBC, discussing living with Bipolar Disorder. I'm really grateful to Melissa for giving me the opportunity to share my story, as I really hope it helps someone. I know it would have helped me if I'd seen someone like me talking about Bipolar when I was in the hospital back in 2006.

Check out the videos after the jump.

The Snob To Talk Mental Illness on MSNBC's "Melissa Harris-Perry" Sunday

Melissa Harris-PerryFirst week at BET's Don't Sleep (hosted by my Arkansas play cousin T. J. Holmes) is down and the second is almost through. I've been a wee bit busy, naturally. But even in all that, I've still got time for the occasional media pit stop! This time it's on MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry's eponymously named show. I'll be on this Sunday, Oct. 14 at 11:30 a.m. EST, talking about mental health issues. As long-time readers know, I've been open about my diagnosis with Bipolar Disorder since 2009. I've written about it here on this blog, spoken about it on Michel Martin's NPR show, and wrote stories about my experiences for Essence Magazine earlier this year in January and BP Magazine in 2011.

Hilarious side note: My friend Dr. Jason Johnson is ALSO going to be on MPH's show this Sunday! It's a black political nerd convention going on! All we need now is TheRoot.com's Keli Goff and The Onion's Baratunde Thurston and there will be enough of us there to form Black Nerd Voltron or something.

Not Helping: Cornel West Calls Melissa Harris Perry "A Liar," "Fake," "Fraud" In Interview

In this latest round of Not HelpingCornel West decided to celebrate Black History Month by kicking a few other black people in the teeth in his continued quixotic quest do what ... I'm not too sure. Keep it real? West gave an interview to Diverse Magazine where he defended his oddly personal past critiques on President Barack Obama, but to also attacked fellow professor and MSNBC regular Melissa Harris Perry, calling the Tulane professor a "liar," "fake" and a "fraud."

(He also kicked the good Rev. Al Sharpton under the table a few times too. Just for funzies, I imagine.)

The Root 100 Is Back! (Featuring Toure, TJ Holmes and Melissa Harris Perry)

ToureNewark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker, musician Esperanza Spalding and writer Toure made The Root 100 list of influencers today. The annual rundown of movers and shakers this year includes a lot of folks I've written about here at The Snob over the past four years, including the prolific Melissa Harris Perry, TV show host and author Marc Lamont Hill, my not-boyfriend on The Daily Show Wyatt Cenac, my other not-boyfriend who married some woman who wasn't me CNN's TJ Holmes, the best haircut in the biz (and sharpest tack in MSNBC's dayside drawer) Tamron Hall, the man formerly known as "pretty, pretty princessHarold Ford Jr., my Twitter friend Jamil Smith who's a producer on The Rachel Maddow Show, pundit Jamal Simmons, this site's most prolific corrections letter writer, super political pundit Roland S. Martin, fellow blogger Ta-Nehisi Coates and comic, Onion editor and Black Snob theme song performer Baratunde Thurston. There's also a bunch of super rich/famous/fancy people on the list to, such as your Beyonces and your Jay-Zs. But they're on every list everywhere, so they don't matter. The Root will have an awards reception for their honorees Nov. 5th here in Washington, D.C. at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, so sit politely by your laptops and wait for your e-vites. (The Root)

Melissa Harris Perry Hates Her Some "Help"

Prof. Melissa Harris PerryRecently academic and author Melissa Harris Perry took one for the team and watched Hollywood's latest offering in mainstream cinema about nice white people saving unfortunate black people (it's their favorite kind), aka, the new Viola Davis film "The Help."

Prof. Harris Perry was able to stave off a head-explosion of irony and focus on everything she absolutely hated about the film -- from the "feel-good" premise of black maids being given their voice by some perky young white woman to how the film took an ounce of history and turned it into a "cat fight" about the "Real Housewives of Jackson, Mississippi."
