If You Don't Hear From The Snob, It's Cause I'm In California!

Howdy all! Blogging from beautiful Studio City, Los Angeles, California, The Snob has left her home base in Washington, D.C. to go out on a work assignment in the city where it hardly ever rains. This week is rather hectic, so I'll be blogging sporadically. Hopefully by the time I work out a regular schedule, Herman Cain will have reduced his gaffe rate to only one "campaign-ending" faux pas a week.

The Snob Is Coming to California!

Returning to the scene of a crime, The Snob is heading to the Golden State for four weeks for a non-blog related side project. As some of you may know, I lived in what was jokingly called the least "California" part of California when I spent five years (2002-2007) in the San Joaquin Valley working for the wonderful Bakersfield Californian newspaper. This time I'll be in Los Angeles. Because of this, I'm planning my first ever California meet-up! I don't know what I'm doing yet for the meet-up, so don't ask me. But if you've got suggestions, shoot me a note here! I'll be in California starting next week through early December.

(Via South Park Studios)There's an episode of the cartoon South Park that parodies the film "The Day After Tomorrow" and hysteria over Global Warming where the citizens of South Park run around fleeing the "warming" while screaming, "We didn't listen!" While this was simply a delicious Hollywood film cliche satire, I couldn't help but think of it when I read Darth Kriss' recent post on Insanity Report about the advent of Kreayshawn and some person called V-Nasty in the world of hip hop.

MusicSnob: Teen Brother Act The Bots Play Some Punk Rock For You

Via The BotsAfter I spent five years in Bakersfield, Calif., I returned to St. Louis with a much wider appreciation of music than I had when I grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. Namely, a wider interest in classic country and punk rock, two staples of the Bakersfield music scene when I was working as an entertainment reporter. It was the same town that had spawned both Merle Haggard with one generation and Korn with another, and while I never really got into Korn's sound, I did enjoy a lot other punk rock acts, new and old, and had the distinction of being the oldest (and blackest) person to occasionally take in a show at Jerry's Pizza.

The Bots, a pair of brothers age 16 and 12 from Glendale, remind me of the kind of kids who made it their goal to play in Jerry's ratty basement for a hard core show.

Racist, Sexist YouTube Campaign Ad Shouts "Give Us Yo Cash, Bitch"

Outrage. I only have so much of it left! 

Therefore, this online campaign produced by the Turn Right USA PAC in support of Tea Party Republican Craig Huey is only getting a heavy sigh and a befuddled stare out of me. This ad is an attack on Democrat and Los Angeles Councilwoman Janice Hahn. Whatever "point" the creators had initially with the ad is lost in the shouts of "Give us yo cash, bitch" while a stripper bends over and shakes her butt with dollars stuck into her booty shorts. It was pretty depressing. Especially with ol' Skids and Mudflap* there, raping along like this crap was cool. (The song was written with the help of fake 2 Live Crew booty bass group, Splack Pack.)

California NAACP Singin' "Legalize It!" The Marijuana, That Is (Wait? What?)

Very rarely does something make my head jerk and do a double take, but when I saw my Twitter friend and sometimes guest blogger Luvvie joking about the NAACP coming out for the legalization of marijuana in California I had to drop whatever I was doing (writing an email to an associate about Thurgood Marshall) and GOOGLE IT!

This Thing Is Not Like the Other: Mormons and "Southern Blacks"

The Church of Latter Day Saints has caught some flack in California for their fight against gay marriage. It's what happens when you walk into the political minefield of civil rights. There's a good chance it could blow up in your face. Well, some in the church don't like the blowback and one Elder Dallin H. Oaks compared being Mormon and against gay marriage to being a Southern black American during the Civil Rights Movement.
