Hot Topics > Writer Claims Exercise Won't Help You Lose Weight

Honestly, diet people, STOP SCREWING WITH ME!

From Time Magazine, via Yahoo:

"In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless," says Eric Ravussin, chair in diabetes and metabolism at Louisiana State University and a prominent exercise researcher. Many recent studies have found that exercise isn't as important in helping people lose weight as you hear so regularly in gym advertisements or on shows like The Biggest Loser - or, for that matter, from magazines like this one.

The basic problem is that while it's true that exercise burns calories and that you must burn calories to lose weight, exercise has another effect: it can stimulate hunger. That causes us to eat more, which in turn can negate the weight-loss benefits we just accrued. Exercise, in other words, isn't necessarily helping us lose weight. It may even be making it harder.

Read the rest here.

Ummmm, it's part of the life cycle...burn energy, eat to refuel, rinse, repeat. It's fools like this that have permeated our food and activity supply, hence the 1,200 lbs cat eatin' 20 Big Macs or the coked-up, rail-thin model promoting "beauty". You can't argue with nature in terms of your size, so don't starve yourself to get into a size negative 3 or peel yourself from the couch to get those bulk supplies of twinkies.

...and then I wonder why I'm stuck in a low-salary area with cats like this making bank, but talking nonsense!

This is nutso. I do believe thought that about 70% of weight loss has to do with what you eat. They're are foods that are high in antioxidents, and fiber, and promote a higher matobolism that help you loose weight. But if you eat alot of it, and dont move around, then you'll just stay a little chubba wubba.

jiminey christmas. really yahoo? really?

Duh, of course exercise won't make you thin. The point of exercise is to increase your metabolism and build muscle. A higher metabolism and lean muscle burns more calories than fat. Folks need to stop equating "skinnyness" with being healthy. There ARE husky runners out there.

Of course, working out will make you want to eat more. That's where self control and good eating habits come into play.

This article is a bit daft. My experience is that when I excercise, I tend to eat less, because my body and nervous system are satisfied and I don't eat a bunch of empty emotional calories trying to feel better. Don't people realize that people don't get fat because they eat because they're hungry. Only eating when you're hungry is a natural thing and a emotionally healthy approach to eating.

People get fat because they're trying to use food to fill emotional voids. If you're exhibiting the mental and emotional discipline it takes to work out regularly you tend to feel better about yourself physically and emotionally. Whether you're losing weight or not, it stands to reason that there'll be less of an emotional void to try to fill with food.

The exercise isn't just for the body. It's for the mind and the soul of a healthy human being.

I guess this explains all those fat and out of shape African/American (and Caribbean ones too!) sprinters who regularly crush the world in anything 400 meters and under.
(Ever SEEN Sanya Richards. Wow!) Or all those really outta shape African distance runners, male and female, who are the class of the world with anything from the 800 meters to the Marathon.
Yep, all those wayyyy outta shape folks. Because, of course, we all know how hard you work the body doesn’t really have much to do with its response.

Or at the very other end of the spectrum, we all know Ronnie Coleman looks like he does ‘cause he’s sittin on his a@@ all day, beer in hand, pushing the TV remote.

Oh, and all those pro cyclists who race things like the Tour de France? It is well know in the cycling world they try and eat upwards of 8,000 or more calories a day during the race days. And most will lose a few more pounds by the end of that 21 day stage race. Yep, gettin’ fat again.
They oughta just sit on the couch …

Just like the rest of life, your effort levels don’t have much to do with the outcome. Why of course!

Hey, if I had some “Dr.” or “PhD” or some other ej-em-u-cated prefix to my name, could I write totally stupid sh@t and get it published too?

There's some truth to it. Exercise is still good for the cardio, so I would recommend that it's done moderately, about 30 minutes a day. I walk 45 mins to an hour a day.

while it isn't the biggest part of losing weight, i'd say it's the biggest part of being healthy.

Exercise is great for the body, raises endorphins, this can't be disputed. However, I'm not a fan of gyms and health clubs, as there should be some function to the exercise one gets, that way it sneaks up on you.
Dancing is great exercise, as is walking. Running, like all these other forms of concentrated, rushed, time maximizing forms, are not as advertised. Running is rough on your joints. Walking is the best exercise, period.

I've recently started to get my walk on by playing Disc Golf (or Frisbee Golf). It's a great sport that IMO not enough black folks are up on. It's played just like regular golf, but apart from the $10 disc, it's free. There are free municipal courses across the country and the world, used almost exclusively by white men. Large expanses of nature within the city that are used by too few people. The course where I play is covered in fruit trees, including blackberries, apples and plums, and after the game I gets to picking free fruit, which is basically free medicine.

Look for a course near you at www.pdga.com, get some friends and some discs, and get back in touch with your bodies and nature.
