Hot Topics > There's No Bad Boy Curse, Diddy Is Just Evil (Shock, Shock)

Found this story on Livesteez. It's a good rundown on why Bad Boy is the place where your career goes to die:

It’s safe to say that Bad Boy is the Bermuda triangle of the music world. Artists go in and are never to be found again. Remember Carl Thomas? Tall, handsome R & B crooner? He’s now an independent artist. Seems very weird considering that he was such a great talent. Disappointed with the direction of their career on Bad Boy, the L.O.X. fought to be released from their contract in order to join the then newly formed Ruff Ryders/ Interscope label. "When you see me, don't ask me nothin' about us and don't definitely ask me about Puffy," the L.O.X.'s Kiss spewed in a song entitled "Blood Pressure." Rapper Mase was dipped in the baptismal font (found Jesus) and is currently saving souls in Atlanta. We definitely don’t consider that a downgrade by no means, but we do find it rather funny that Bad Boy artists need spiritual guidance after dealing with Mr. Take That, Take That. I.E. Loon converting to Islamic faith. Both Mase and Loon declined to comment on the matter.

He is such a jerk. May God have mercy on Puffy's soul. If he still has one.

Anyone who signs to Bad Boy hoping to get their career going better know they have some other joy ride in store for them. Puffy is the ultimate career killer. "Making of the Band" is utterly futile. Danity Kane, Day 26 and Donnie B have all pretty much done mediocre. How does anyone think such an ego-crazed person could look out for an up and coming artist in the music biz?

I have never understood the hype surrounding P diddy/Puffy or whatever he is calling himslef these days. An egotistical, talentless little man. He is ceratinly not getting rich from my money so who are the dummies fueling the Puffy show?

June 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLili

Puffy made his money by being one of the pioneers of the remix. He also made a ton off of Notorious B.I.G., who's album, Life After Death sold over 10MM copies. He started the fragrances and clothing line at a time before the market was saturated with stars doing the same. He basically became a successful brand. Unfortunately, he is a brand who won't leave the music industry even though he is mostly irrelevant now.

Puffy is a visionary, and the artists who have had the privilege of working with him should be grateful. The fact that Day 26 has any sort of relevance should be attributed to Diddy. They are a collection of unremarkable talent, that was given the Diddy brand, and made into stars. The hate that he continues to receive is unfounded.

so how's 112 doing these days?

Was it 702 or SWV that were under his label? Have we heard anything from them lately? Someone clue me in; I stopped listening to the R&B/Rap radio stations about 10 years ago so I'm out of the loop.

June 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterd

112 left Bad Boy in 2003. They signed with Def Jam, and fell off the map. There last big hit was "Peaches and Cream", an awful song by the way, and that was while they were still on Bad Boy.

When I hear Puffy Daddy spouting off his mantras, I want to burn my New Age card. Forget this, call me normal, I'm quitting the movement! I think I'll try the Catholic church.

Check the stats. Mark Curry put out a book called Dancing With the Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of Hip Hop where he runs the names. The comments below are his, not mine.

Mark Curry = NOT ALBUM (several features)
Craig Mac = ONE ALBUM
G-Dep = ONE ALBUM (gone. I remember this dude got arrested & couldn’t even pay his bail & had to stay in jail for months)
Total = TWO ALBUMS (gone)
Carl Thomas = TWO ALBUMS (he left after his 2nd and still sings I think)
Black Rob = TWO ALBUMS (2nd album tanked & is serving 7yrs for robbery)
Shyne = ONE ALBUM (You all know he’s serving a 10yr bid for bussin his gun for Diddy)
LOX = ONE ALBUM (left cuz of bad promo & being tricked on $)
Dream = ONE ALBUM (Dropped and their 2nd album never came out)
8Ball & MJG = TWO ALBUMS (left cuz of bad promo)
Loon = ONE ALBUM (left cuz bad promo & $)
Mario Winans = ONE ALBUM (dropped ‘04 haven’t heard from him since)
Da Band = ONE ALBUM (Gone. Kept Ness, Young City & Babs. 1 out of the 3 were set to release a album)
Young City = ALMOST ONE ALBUM (Was set to release w/ his single “Lil Daddy” & never did after Katrina)
Danity Kane - massive implosion after 2 albums
Cheri Dennis... where is she now

My thoughts... Diddy's talent is self-promotion, ability to relate to the MTV crowd, nasty habit of being the last one standing at a gun fight and talent scouting. Artist - NOT. Actor- NOT. Diddy/Puffy/Whatever gets hated on because his vodka drinking, no dancing, jacking over his own kind to get ahead deserves it. He personally RUINED A Raisin in the Sun for me. Pardon the rant.

Notice anything about the artists you have listed? Either they self-destructed or were not very talented in the 1st place.

June 1, 2009 | Registered CommenterPCH

^^^I disagree. "Dream". I remember those young ladies. I felt they could sing; actually really liked their releases, but what happened? 112, they could sing and I personally liked "Peaches & Cream". LOL. But I thought they were talented. Total, sigh...loved them. Carl Thomas, have his first record, talented brother. Mario Winans, didn't he also write for Bad Boy? Isn't he still with the label as a writer but not necessarily as an artist?

If this roster listed above displays artists who imploded or who lacked talent from jump, what talent, pray tell, comprises the current roster on Bad Boy? Who's going strong? Hell, who's going? Other than Day26......and I guess that one lady from Danity Kane....who else is on the label?

I wonder how Janelle Monae will fare in the long run? Though I know she's been doing lots of shows lately; she's still relatively under the radar. Amazing talent though. Amazing.

To the poster who commented on Diddy as a 'brand', I completely concur and perhaps that's his niche and artists who go to the label should know this going in. Diddy is about Diddy, first and foremost. They have plenty of examples to go by; they should consider themselves forewarned.

Wow! This is no joke, but last weekend I was thinking about Carl Thomas. I need to find my CDs and load both on my IPod. Has he made an album since IPods became ubiquitous?

June 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

Thanks OneChele. Total was the girl group I was thinking about. I kinda liked their stuff. catchy, ya know? I liked 112.

@PCH: I notice you keep defending Puffy. That's well and good but why would you reply to One Chele by stating that "they self-destructed or were not very talented in the 1st place"? If Puffy is so great and wonderful why would he pick so many so-called "not very talented" people? I know producers aren't perfect and there are always a few bad apples but I can't create this kind of list for Jermaine Dupree(sp) or Rick Rubin...

June 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterd

Actually you can make this kind of list for anyone with a long history in the business. I don't see anyone slamming Jermaine Dupri for Kriss Kross, J K-won, 3LW, Xscape, Bonecrusher, or Youngbloodz. Rick Rubin does not get reamed for Trouble, Messiah, Palo Alto, Saul Williams, or the myriad of acts that he has produced that did not take off.

Craig Mack became a Christian and stopped making mainstream music. When he decided to come back into the game, Puffy welcomed him back, but the marketplace had moved on.

Total broke up. The girls are either married or pursuing solo projects.

Black Rob could not stay out of trouble with the law. I actually think he is doing a bid as we speak.

And once again, 112's demise should be pinned on Def Jam and 112 themselves.

******* IS ****

I think Puff is good at finding talent but cannot promote talent. He is great at promoting himself, but not other people. Honestly, Jay-Z is the same way. I won't say these artists lacked talent, because some were very talented. Where is Faith by the way? No one can say she wasn't talented. At her prime, her voice could easily rival Mary J Blige. I agree with PCH in that all promoters have hits and misses, but that's about it.
